Beehives For Ethiopia
Ethiopia is one of the countries in the world with a long tradition of beekeeping. The country is estimated to have the largest bee colonies in Africa with over 10 Million Bee Colonies.
It is estimated that there are 11,143,030 beehives with 10,605,120 being traditional baskets in trees, where waste and animal contamination is frequent. There are only 509,800 modern beehives in Ethiopia. Each beehive will cost $40 and generate $175 annually for a family, which is almost half their annual income.
68.8 Million people live off the grid in Ethiopia, with 12 hours of sun, and 12 hours of darkness. Adding a few hours of light after dark allows children to do their homework, or families to add hours of productivity in their daily lives. A $45 dollar item can make a tremendous difference to a family.
